I was living in Hawaii when this story takes place. I had taken in a friend who needed a place to live and let her sleep in the living room of my one bedroom apartment. One night she brought home a friend and asked if he could stay the night. I didn't realize at the time that she had just met him or I would have asked him to leave.

My spirit often travels when I sleep and I know this because a few times I have had to come back in a hurry and my conscious mind has retained the memory of these returns. On this night I was somewhere far away when suddenly I sensed a problem and returned so quickly that I didn't even shift levels. In previous times I have returned through the gray level, which is the boundary between the spirit world and the material world. In the gray level there are ghosts that haven't crossed over and temporal images of things that have existed in the real world but since been destroyed; it is a place of memories. But this time I came back in the upper levels and as I appeared in my bedroom the air felt like water. It was thick and viscous in nature and everything in the room seemed to have a sort of aura about it. I had been visited by spirits before who had come to me while I was awake who had come in this level. They seemed to make the air thick, as though their presence filled the room or changed the physical properties of things around them. Now I found out what it was like to be one of those spirits.

I had left a candle burning when I went to bed and in the candle light I could see my body still laying asleep in bed. Something was in the room, but I couldn't see it. I just sensed it was there and that it was not good.

"What are you doing here and what do you want?" I challenged the foreign spirit.

The thing started to laugh. "You know why I am here, I need a body." It answered. "You can't stay here. You have to go back and finish what you were doing. When you leave I will take your body."

It irritated me that the creature was so bold and boastful. I looked at the eagle feathers hanging over my bed. I had been given the feathers when I had received my Indian name at the age of eighteen. I kept them over the place I slept where ever I lived and now I wondered why this thing thought it could trespass beyond their sphere of power?

The thing seemed to read my mind. "You think those feathers will protect you, you think that they are close enough," the thing stated in answer to my unspoken question. "But in this place, in this level of existence, they are far away and their power will not protect you. You should know that."

The thing started to laugh again. It sounded insane. "I can fix that." I replied, and walked over to the wall, taking the spirit from the feathers. While my spirit was doing this my conscious mind was amazed. I hadn't known that this was possible and now I was being shown why eagle feathers were more than symbols of spiritual power by my own spirit! I lay the spirit feathers between my body and the invisible creature and for some reason I touched my shoulder and told myself, "Don't roll over on the feathers."

This action was even more amazing! My body was a material thing and the feathers laying between it and the creature were of the spirit. If I rolled on them it wouldn't harm them. Why did I tell myself not to do this? I turned to the creature and said, "Now they are close enough and now you must leave."

The invisible creature became angry. "You have stopped me this time, but I will find another. I need a body and I will have one!" It declared.

"Go now, you are not welcome here!" I told it. "Leave this place and never return, for I will always be prepared for you!"

The thing cackled and once again declared, "I will have a body! You have stopped nothing!" And then it left. I had to leave again, as the creature had said there were things I needed to do that night and they couldn't be left undone.

The next day I started asking my friend about the guy she had brought home. He was just someone she had met. He gave her a ride home and on the way he had told her he was possessed by demons. He had told her he could see them around him whenever he looked in a mirror. I told her about the incident with the body snatcher and told her never to bring him or anyone else around again. Since then I have learned to take precautions against such creatures whenever I have to go somewhere as a spirit. I am not sure if the thing was a demon in the sense of the Christian church's definition. I really don't know what it was.

Recently I met someone who was drawn into a conflict in the astral plane. Two others were fighting and he was drawn to the scene to witness the fight. He said there was something small and invisible which kept hanging around as though it were waiting for something to happen. I told him it was waiting to see who would be the loser and that it would steal the body of the weakened combatant. It is things like this that make me believe that possession is real.

So where did I go when I traveled as a spirit? I don't know. I have had a couple of dreams that were also visions and know what happened a couple of times during my travels. But for the rest, I cannot say. My activities remain the secret knowledge of my spirit and I have no idea if they will ever be revealed.
